O_O;
The community is whatever you personally make of it. There are all kind of people who play and the best way to get what you want out of them is to join a guild with similar interests to yourself. Get a guild you fit into and everything is fine, get an unsuitable guild and you won't even have half as much fun.

wow. Apparently TAM & GoE Alliance is famous.

A few "super alliances" like LAZY, TAM (I'm biased here, seeing as how RKOD was in a TAM alliance for a while when they just started out), and GoE are somewhat well known... but mostly to the forum going public.
The average joe shmo in game doesn't know anybody.

I mean, when Galie (the a.net customer service rep) retired and they threw a party for her, I'd say ~80% of the people in game were asking "who the heck is Galie?" in local chat.

As such, I severely doubt just how "famous" people are to the average player. You really have to hang out on forums to get to "know the right people", and then you are only famous within that click.

I'd hardly call the TAM-GoE alliance (Same alliance btw) a super alliance. quality over quantity is the requirement there. lazy are a large alliance but have alot of less experienced players as members.
I know that TAM are much stricter with guild invites and i believe GoE and the other guilds in the alliance have similar requirements.

I think everyone knows Shan and DVDF is pretty well known for pve wise. Wanting fame threw a game is kinda dumb.... Maybe you can become a famous pokemon master! And like have your own show!

People bring up TAM? bunch of nubs...... Especially that snow bunny guy.

Fame? On the PvE side it's hard to imagine a less suitable game for gaining peer recognition than GW. Pretty much any achievement is obtainable with a minimal amount of dedication, including the ultimate PvE title (yes, I do have GWAMM like everybody and his pet Dune Lizard, apparently). There just isn't anything to set you apart from the crowd, and I think that it's good to have an actual game instead of an e-peen stroking contest.

On the PvP side it is possible to gain (limited) fame through skill but GW is not enough of a spectator sport for actual stardom.

Outside those two, the best way to become if not famous then at least respected is to contribute to the community through wikis and forums.

Good friends with randoms? Very occasionally. The community are mainly a joke for me because of the unwillingness to get better because they already think they're the shit and they're terrible. There are a few of them that are alright though, not many.

Fame? Getting fame through a game isn't really the way to go as far as I'm concerned. I know TAM, DVDF, SMS, LaZy and other guilds are well known, but you can't really say skill levels jump the gun, as not everyone in those guilds are top notch players.

PS: I'm talking about myself too on that "top notch players" bit. I still have major kinks I need to get over. I know what to do, but I just can't do it sometimes.

oh and Eagleblade, the part you said about he gw community not being what it used to be, is very true.....but then again just about erry aspect of the game has changed in some way.
how right you are
excuse me for going a bit off topic but for example look at what they recently added to the game another hero M.O.X.
I think this game is at the desperate point wouldnt you rather say?
what comes next a hero called Abaddon?? lol

and when is gw2 going to come out? the world will never know
probably one of those games that gets released way too late.

and yet, no one answering the OP's second follow up >_>

Yes, GW is still populated, however, being you only have the first 2 chapters, the population on them may not be as much as the latest expansion (gw:EN) but nonetheless, people are still around.

and no one knows when GW2 will be released, its still AT LEAST end of next year though.. so you got plenty of time if you want to be dedicated enough to achieve something..

welcome back TC! ^_^
